On today’s episode, Idaho author David Stone shares his children’s picture book, “Good Night Bunkie,” written to comfort children with incarcerated relatives.
Good Night Bunkie

According to Stone, “Good Night Bunkie” is a fun parody of the timeless classic “Goodnight Moon,” created to bring comfort and understanding to families with loved ones in prison. Written during Stone’s own time at Lompoc Federal Prison Camp, this unique bedtime story offers a glimpse into the nightly routines within the walls of a federal prison, providing reassurance to children that their incarcerated parent is safe and thinking of them.
With only a pencil and typewriter, Stone wrote this book to connect with his own children and let them know he was going to be alright. The simple text and playful dialog capture a father’s love for his children, even when circumstances outside of his control physically separated them.
Accompanied by simple and fun illustrations, this book takes readers inside a U.S. federal prison, showcasing how inmates live and spend their time. The witty dialog shows a few of the positive aspects of prison life but still captures the difficulties and trouble each incarcerated inmate faces.
“Good Night Bunkie” is more than just a bedtime story; it’s a comforting read that helps children understand and cope with the reality of having an incarcerated parent. It offers a gentle way to discuss difficult topics and provides hope for the day that their loved one will be released.
